A Fateful Tour

16/06    After this stint across the ocean, we return to Barcelona, buy a van, get some gear and start a European tour at Belgrade.  A fateful European Tour.  Sabela is assaulted at the bus station and I have no money to pay for the hotel room.  Nevertheless, 462 people come to the Nightfall and see a pretty good show (or Mediocre, as the papers would put it).

18/06    From Belgrade we travel to another new city, Tallinn.  Up to then, we had always travelled by plane.  Now we have a battered van where we can transport our new equipment, but we had not taken road routes into account when we planned the tour.  A novice error.  So we would arrive in Tallinn just a few hours before the concert.  And a second error piles on: our old van breaks down on the road, delaying the journey.  We arrive at the LpB Club too late and the concert fails.  The strain was too much for poor Sabela, who ends up in hospital due to a nervous breakdown.  Not a great tour.

20/06    I have to go on by myself to cover our compromises.  I play alone at the Neverland in Amsterdam; I do my best, but Sabela’s absence leaves the 620 attendants unhappy and they consider the show Dreadful.  Besides, an angry fan attacks me outside the club and leaves me quite badly hurt.

22/06    We really need things to get better.  Fortunately, Sabela recovers and meets me in Helsinki, where we have a show at the Neverland.  Yes, we play for the competition.  And pretty well too: 1085 people see a just Below Average show; not bad, given the circumstances.

23/06    Before the Helsinki gig we had been hearing some recordings sent by a Dutch guitarist called Bertha Beentjes.  The time to incorporate more people into the band had arrived.  We like her style, call her and agree to get her in.  We would meet in Ankara, but in the meantime we have to rush to London to play another concert at the Bouleau’s Metal in front of 985 people.  We make an official announcement that Bertha is in the band, which happens to be another misstep; people think that Bertha would be on stage with us and are quite disappointed when she is not, so the critics consider our show Terrible.  Would our bad luck ever end?

26/06    We arrive at Ankara and meet Bertha.  After our experience at London, we clearly need to have Bertha on stage, so we rush a rehearsal and tread the Under Heavy Metal stage in front of 329 people.  Our new trio still needs more practice, so we just manage a Poor show.

28/06    A new show at the Metalia in Madrid.  I have some new ideas for the show, including a little onstage sex number between Bertha and myself.  People like it, but Sabela does not.  Not at all.  She gets really upset and leaves the stage in the middle of the show.  In front of a record audience of 1304 people.  Another disaster and another Dreadful show.  My mistake, we should have discussed that number with her beforehand.

30/06    We manage to clarify things after the show, but the sex number is dropped.  We try to concentrate on music for our show at the Moshpit Metal in Dubrovnik.  But we just manage another Poor concert in front of 548 people.

01/07    We had sent some songs Sabela and I had recorded during our last stay in Barcelona to be released as a new single in Christmas.  Get It Out b/w Valhalla Ride sells really great during the holiday season.

03/07    748 people see us play at the Seventh Son in Bucharest.  Things are going much better now; high record sales boost our morale, Bertha is getting the knack of the songs and the overall show is more polished.  In spite of covers getting old, we recover our old Below Average standards.

05/07    The European Tour ends at my Helsinki club, the Sonorama Metal.  Although we had played there recently, 818 people turn up and see our standard Below Average show.  Quite happy after rounding the rough edges, our trio returns to Barcelona for some rest and rehearsal before the second leg of our European Tour.

Our First Record, and Back to the Far East

03/06    Not everything was resting.  Sabela and I get in the studio to record our first single.  Backslash b/w Moonlighting hits the streets.  We are very happy to have a record in the market.

05/06    In addition to the record, we also work on some new material and start a new World Tour in Mexico City.  In addition to some new covers, we premiere two of my songs (It’s Raining Axes and Thor’s Hammer).  It’s Raining Axes would eventually become a favourite.  In front of 409 people, high morale and high energy lead us to our first Above Average concert.  Ever since that day, Mexico City has been the place in the world where our popularity is highest.  A great way to start a tour!

08/06    We keep travelling around the world to play at the Metal & Cia in Shanghai.  After our huge debut in Mexico, we decide to take things a bit easier to avoid burnout, so we can just offer a Below Average concert to the 320 attendants.  Anyway, we are very pleased that our standard level has risen.

10/06    Our second show in Singapore.  The first time we repeat a city outside Spain.  On the wake of our previous concert, 952 people come to see us.  We make an effort and our show is slightly better than the previous one; the critics consider it Mediocre.

12/06    Mjolnir treads its fourth continent with a gig at the Bet & Metal in Melbourne.  442 people from down under come to see our standard Below Average show.  We premiere my latest song, Valhalla Ride, which serves to finally retire Indecision, the only song from the Imagnosis times that we were still playing.  And then back home, crossing the whole planet.  Our European Tour was waiting in just a few days.

First Tour

06/05    We were surprised by an offer to play in the other side of the world.  Singapore, there we go!  We play in front of more than 500 people for the first time; exactly 519.  The long journey takes its toll and our show is just Below Average.  But we are happy.

10/05    Back from Singapore, we start a short European Tour.  Our first gig is at the club I manage, the Sonorama Metal in Helsinki.  Jetlagged, we decide to take things a bit easier and we just manage to play a Poor concert in front of 280 people.

13/05    We return to Barcelona to play at L’Ovella Negra.  We break another personal record: 1088 people turn up to see us, but once again our show is Poor.  In spite of that, we struck a pretty close relation with the club CEO, Gene McCarty, who also works for Seventh Son Records.  Gene becomes our manager and we sign a contract with his record company.

16/05    Next stop: Rome.  We play at the RPI in front of 438 people and we recover our previous standards.  Our concert is just Below Average.

19/05    Our next show is at the LuDivine in Paris.  Things do not work very well.  Only 230 people show up and our concert was Poor.

21/05    We cross the Eurotunnel to play at London, again at the LuDivine.  It becomes clear that our covers are growing old; in spite of our high energy, the 423 people that came to see us went back home quite disappointed after another Poor concert.

23/05    Third LuDivine in a row, this time in Glasgow, and third Poor show, this time in front of just 181 people.  The strain of the tour is taking its toll on us.  We are just too tire to perform well, in spite of giving it all on stage.  We return home and take a much needed rest.

The Early Years

The story of Mjolnir started when I (Lolo) decided that my time with Imagnosis had come to an end.  The band was cracking at the seams.  So I decided to move from Madrid to Barcelona and start again.  I went to see my friend Miren and she introduced me to her cousin Sabela, a newcomer looking for a heavy metal band.  We stroke off immediately.  I would play guitar and flute, while she would take care of bass and lead vocals.

We start rehearsing a mix of old songs I wrote for Imagnosis and some covers of famous songs.  From now on, I will tell the story of the band as a timeline.

17/03    First show at the Dark Poison in Barcelona.  Sabela and I play in front of just 59 people.  Critics say the concert was Dreadful, but we were delighted with our debut.

03/04    We decide to leave our city and play in my hometown, Madrid.  251 people come to see us at the Heavy’s Local Molineuro.  This time, the critics are more gentle and just say our show was Poor.  We feel encouraged by the positive reviews.

13/04    We continue with our Spanish shows.  Back in Barcelona, we play at the Paranoid, ready to conquer.  369 people see a show that was greeted by the critics as just Below Average.  Not bad for our third show!  This was the first time we played some songs I had written specifically for Mjolnir (Backslash, Get It Out and Moonlighting).

21/04    We hurry a new show at Madrid.  Just 73 people show up; this, together with the fact that the promoters decided to lower the prices just before the show, makes us quite angry.  In spite of it, we play our best show to date; it was considered Mediocre.

27/04    We feel ready to play a few gigs around Europe.  As a warm-up, we take part in a competition at El Tímpano Sordo in Barcelona.  Once again, our show is Mediocre, but the rest of the bands were too good for us.  128 people saw us play there.

Next stop: Mjolnir goes abroad.
